Khangai Herds: Part 2

This second segment of Khangai Herds features Saikhanaa the herder interacting with yak calves during milking time in the Khangai mountains of Mongolia. He indicates which calves belong to their respective mothers, showing a good knowledge of the genealogy of the yak herd.

Khangai Herds: Part 3

This is the third installment of Khangai Herds, featuring herders and herd animals in the Khangai Mountains of Mongolia. This segment follows on from ‘Saikhanaa and the Calves’.

After the cow milking, Saikhanaa assists the men in catching the geldings for the days herding. The men and boys then tether foals to tethering lines for mare milking. Saikhanaa demonstrates his excellent knowledge of the herd animals’ genealogy by identifying which young horses are associated with their respective mothers.

Khangai Herds: Part 4

This fourth segment of Khangai Herds features two separate nomadic family encampments in the valleys of the Khangai mountains of Mongolia. Extended families move with the dramatic change of seasons in order to find the best pasture for their herd animals. The first part ‘Moving Encampments by Ox’ shows Choijo’s encampment packing up the entire family home and moving by ox cart to an autumn encampment. The second part ‘Moving with the Herd Animals’ features Dogsomjav moving the herd animals to new pastures following a broad river valley.

Khangai Herds: Part 5

This is the fifth segment of ‘Khangai Herds’, featuring herders and their herd animals co-existing together in the Khangai mountains of Mongolia. Lhagva sings a song about her venerable mother. She explains to me the importance of cattle in her life, how she names them and nurtures them from birth. This is followed by a scene of a cow giving birth to a calf in a snow storm in spring. Lhagva names the newborn calf ‘Menget’ meaning ‘Birthmark’.

Khangai Herds: Part 6

This sixth segment of Khangai Herds features a day in the life of a Mongolian herding woman, who has ten children and twenty-six grandchildren. It is spring and she is caring full-time for a six month old grandchild but nurturing many newborn herd animals as well. She herds the sheep and goats with a couple of her grandchildren and discusses a wolf attack with a neighbouring herding woman.
